WOMEN RECOGNISED FOR EXCELLENCE IN CONSTRUCTION
From the Minister for Womens Affairs
Friday, 08 October 2010
Minister for Women’s Affairs Maxine Morand tonight congratulated the 15 winners of the National Association of Women in Construction’s Victorian Awards.
Ms Morand said NAWIC’s Victorian and Tasmanian Chapter Awards celebrated exceptional women who were achieving excellence in a largely male-dominated field.
“I congratulate NAWIC for its vision and enduring work across 15 years to support the women in the industry, encouraging effective leadership, training, innovation and diversity,” she said.
“Your work sits squarely within Victoria’s priorities to pursue the equal participation of women in all aspects of life in our state.”
“The participation of women in the building and construction industry has remained largely unchanged since 1986 – ranging between 12 and 14 per cent.
“We need more women working in this crucial sector of the Victorian economy and as such we need to promote the diverse roles that are available.”
Ms Morand said the Brumby Labor Government was pleased to support NAWIC’s new mentoring program aimed at promoting careers including designers, architects, engineers, lawyers and project managers.
“Under NAWIC’s mentoring program, 50 mentors and mentees will share valuable knowledge, ideas and experience and build new networks across the building and construction industry and workforce,” she said.
At the awards, Ms Morand presented the outstanding achievement in design award to Beatrix Lehnert of Grocon Constructions. Other Victorian outstanding achievement award winners included:
Special commendations were also awarded to: Rachael Edginton of Plum Communication (businesswoman); Bianca Donnelly of Clean and Gone (contribution to environmental sustainability); Brodene Graham of Bilfinger Berger Services (construction); Callie MacIntosh of Baulderstone and Rhiannon Cooper of Sinclair Knight Merz (young achievers); Huai Lim of Sinclair Knight Merz (design) and Leanne Mitchell (apprentice / trainee).
