Which Bin?
Which Bin? has been made to help Victorian residents or visiting friends understand which items are able to be recycled. I've often seen my mother struggle to read which number is in the tiny recycling triangle on the bottom of yoghurt containers. After about 5 minutes she resorts to using a magnifying glass and finally the often undecipherable number defeats her.
Everyday thousands of Victorian's contaminate recycling loads with items which should not be recycled, or place items which should be recycled in the garbage bins destined for landfill. They do this because of the lack of knowledge about municipal recycling rules and the level of effort required to find them out. For example: My dear mum for the last 20 years has only been recycling plastic 1, 2 & 3 items, unaware that 4, 5, 6 & 7 could also be recycled in her municipal area.
Which Bin? aims to increase recycling compliance in the community by making it easy & fun to discover if items are recyclable. The application works by using the latest location detection technologies to associated a person with a municipality, then asks them to simply scan a product barcode. These details are then used to query a community created database of products and display picture of which bin the items should be placed in. If a item in not currently in the database, the application educates the person about the different types of recyclable items and helps them to add the new item to the database.
hich Bin? runs as a iPhone application, however can also be used by any internet browser, with specific styling for modern day mobile devices (eg. Android & Blackberry) making it accessible to the broader community. Website version uses html5 geolocation or a manually entered postcode to place the person in a municipal area. The barcode is required to be entered manually.
